"Why is there a question mark?"
Michael didn't answer.
Victoria turned toward him.
"Tell me."
He swallowed.
"Because there is a possibility Anna wasn't the mother of Lily."
Silence.
Victoria stared.
"What?"
Michael looked at her.
"There was another woman."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Then what do you know?"
Michael hesitated.
"The DNA records don't match."
Victoria felt the room spin.
"What DNA records?"
"Records from the hospital."
"Anna gave birth to Lily."
"Yes."
"Then why wouldn't the DNA match?"
Michael looked at Lucy.
"Because Lily wasn't Anna's biological daughter."
Lucy stared.
"Then whose daughter was she?"
Before Michael could answer, a sound echoed through the corridor.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was coming.
Victoria grabbed Lucy.
Michael stepped in front of them.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"You shouldn't have opened that door."
Victoria recognized the voice.
Edward.
"Come out."
A man stepped into the light.
Edward looked exhausted.
His clothes were wet.
There was blood on his sleeve.
Victoria stared.
"Where have you been?"
"Running."
"From whom?"
"Everyone."
Michael stepped forward.
"You were at the church."
Edward looked at him.
"I didn't shoot at you."
"You were there."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Edward looked at Victoria.
"To stop them."
"Who?"
Edward pointed toward the files.
"The people who are still alive."
Victoria narrowed her eyes.
"You're going to have to do better."
Edward took a breath.
"Briggs was never the mastermind."
"We know."
"Jonathan isn't either."
"We know."
Edward shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the three siblings.
"You don't know."
He pointed toward the family tree.
"The person who started all of this is still alive."
Victoria felt cold.
"Who?"
Edward answered,
"Eleanor Whitmore."
Lucy froze.
Victoria turned toward the older woman.
Eleanor had followed them into the underground room.
She stood silently at the end of the corridor.
Victoria stared.
"No."
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't want you to find out this way."
Victoria stepped toward her.
"You knew."
Eleanor said nothing.
"You knew about the underground rooms."
Silence.
"You knew about Samuel."
Silence.
"You knew about Michael."
Eleanor lowered her head.
"And Lily."
Victoria's voice broke.
"You knew where Lily was."
Eleanor finally looked up.
"I know where she is."
Lucy stepped forward.
"Where?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"She's here."
Lucy frowned.
"Here?"
Eleanor pointed toward the corridor.
"She has been here all along."
Victoria's blood ran cold.
"What do you mean?"
Eleanor whispered,
"She is the reason this house was built."
Victoria stared at her.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Eleanor shook her head.
"It is the only thing that makes sense."
She walked toward the final door.
There was no lock.
Only three circular openings.
One for each half of the locket.
Michael inserted his piece.
Lucy inserted hers.
Victoria inserted hers.
The door opened.
Inside was a room unlike any other.
It was warm.
Bright.
There were photographs everywhere.
A bed.
A desk.
A wardrobe.
A piano.
A child's toys.
On the wall was a single photograph.
A little girl.
Perhaps six years old.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A silver locket.
Victoria stared.
She knew the face.
She had seen it before.
In the photograph of the woman standing beside her father.
The same eyes.
The same scar.
The same smile.
Lucy whispered,
"That's Lily."
Eleanor nodded.
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
Eleanor pointed toward the photograph.
"Look closer."
Lucy stepped forward.
She noticed something behind the girl.
A window.
Outside was Hale House.
Victoria looked at the photograph.
The picture had been taken inside the underground room.
The girl had been living there.
Not decades ago.
Recently.
Victoria touched the frame.
"When was this taken?"
Eleanor answered,
"Six months ago."
Victoria froze.
"She's alive."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Eleanor looked toward the door.
"She has been watching you."
Victoria turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She was perhaps thirty-five.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A small scar above her eyebrow.
The same scar as Anna.
The same eyes as Victoria.
The woman stared at the three siblings.
Tears ran down her face.
Lucy whispered,
"Lily?"
The woman nodded.
Then she spoke.
"Mom was right."
Victoria could barely breathe.
"You know Anna?"
Lily smiled sadly.
"She's my mother."
Lucy stepped forward.
"Then why didn't you come to us?"
Lily looked at her.
"Because I wasn't allowed."
"By whom?"
Lily looked at Eleanor.
Victoria turned.
Eleanor was crying.
Victoria's voice became hard.
"Who kept her here?"
Eleanor answered.
"I did."
The room became silent.
Victoria stared at her aunt.
"You imprisoned your own niece?"
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
She pointed toward the ceiling.
"I protected her."
"From whom?"
"From your father."
"My father is dead."
"Yes."
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"But the people who served him are not."
She looked toward Edward.
"And one of them is standing right there."
Victoria turned.
Edward had disappeared.
The door behind him was closing.
Victoria ran.
She reached it just as it locked.
A mechanical sound echoed through the room.
Then the lights went out.
Lily screamed.
Michael grabbed Lucy.
Victoria felt along the wall.
"Everybody stay together."
A voice came through a hidden speaker.
Edward.
"You were never supposed to find her."
Victoria shouted,
"Where are you?"
"Outside."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because I finally understand what my father wanted."
Victoria froze.
"Your father?"
Edward's voice trembled.
"He was Richard Hale's son."
