Daniel Mercer — 1978.

Victoria felt dizzy.

"Then why did Richard have his ring?"

Nobody answered.

Then Lily whispered:

"Because they were brothers."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed to another document.

A birth record.

Two boys.

Born three minutes apart.

Same mother.

Same father.

Daniel Hale.

Richard Hale.

Victoria stared.

"Daniel wasn't just Anna's husband."

Michael shook his head.

"He was Richard's twin."

Lucy looked horrified.

"But Mom married him."

"Yes."

"And Richard hated him."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Evelyn answered.

"Because Daniel knew the truth."

"What truth?"

Evelyn looked toward the shelves.

"He knew Richard had stolen the Whitmore inheritance."

Victoria shook her head.

"Then why did Daniel disappear?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"He didn't disappear."

"What?"

"He was killed."

"By Richard?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

Victoria already knew.

A box sat on the lowest shelf.

Its label was handwritten.

D.M.

Victoria opened it.

Inside were letters.

The first one was dated three weeks before Daniel's death.

Anna,

If you are reading this, something has happened to me.

Do not trust Richard.

Do not trust anyone who claims the family can be saved by sacrificing one person.

There is a child you do not know about.

Victoria froze.

She read the next line.

Her name is Evelyn.

But she is not the child you think.

Lily leaned over.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria kept reading.

Samuel is her father.

Not Daniel.

He asked me to protect her.

I failed.

Victoria stopped.

"Evelyn."

The woman standing across the room had tears in her eyes.

"Yes."

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of the man who killed Daniel."

Victoria looked at her.

"Who?"

Evelyn said nothing.

Then the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

A metallic sound echoed through the tunnel.

Someone had closed the vault door.

Lucy grabbed Victoria's arm.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Michael pulled out his phone.

"No signal."

A sound came from behind the shelves.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming closer.

Victoria whispered,

"Stay together."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice spoke.

"Victoria."

She knew the voice.

Her blood turned cold.

It belonged to someone who should have been dead.

"Anna?"

Lucy gasped.

The voice came again.

"Don't trust Evelyn."

Evelyn stepped backward.

"No."

Victoria stared at her.

"Who is that?"

Evelyn's face had gone white.

"She shouldn't be here."

The voice laughed.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

At the end of the room stood a woman.

Older.

Thin.

Her hair streaked with gray.

Her face was scarred.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Lucy whispered,

"Mom?"

The woman looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Lucy."

Lucy ran forward.

Victoria caught her.

"Wait."

The woman raised both hands.

"I'm not going to hurt her."

Victoria stared.

"Anna?"

The woman nodded.

"Yes."

Michael stepped forward.

"You're alive."

Anna smiled sadly.

"For now."

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Victoria couldn't breathe.

She had spent decades believing her sister was dead.

She had mourned her.

She had built a foundation in her name.

She had spoken about her at memorials.

And now Anna stood in front of her.

Alive.

Older.

Broken.

But alive.

Victoria finally whispered:

"Why?"

Anna looked at her.

"Because if I came home, they would kill you."

"Who?"

Anna glanced toward Evelyn.

"Everyone who knows about the vault."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Anna..."

"Don't."

Anna's voice became hard.

"You lied to them."

"I protected you."

"You protected the family."

"I protected your children."

Anna looked at Lucy.

Then Michael.

Then Lily.

"You protected the secret."

Silence.

Victoria stepped forward.

"You owe me an explanation."

Anna nodded.

"I know."

"Twenty-eight years."

"I know."

"I thought you were dead."

"I wanted you to."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"How could you?"

Anna looked down.

"Because Richard told me he would kill you if I came back."

Victoria froze.

"What?"

"He had people watching you."

"Why?"

"Because you were the only person he couldn't control."

Victoria shook her head.

"I was twelve."

"Exactly."

Anna walked closer.

"You were young enough to be ignored and old enough to remember."

"Remember what?"

Anna looked at her.

"The night Daniel died."

Victoria's breath stopped.

"I told you I didn't remember."

"You did."

Anna reached into her coat.

She pulled out a cassette tape.

"This is why."

Victoria stared.

"What is it?"

"Your memory."

They found an old cassette player in the archive.

Anna inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

A man's voice.

Richard.

Another man's voice.

Daniel.

Victoria's face changed.

She remembered.

A hallway.

A door.

Rain.

Her father shouting.

Daniel saying:

"You cannot take the children."

Richard replied:

"They aren't yours to protect."

Daniel:

"Anna will expose you."

Richard:

"Anna will disappear."

Then a crash.

A scream.

Silence.

Victoria covered her mouth.

"I remember."

Anna looked at her.

"You saw him."

"Who?"

"Daniel."

Victoria closed her eyes.

She remembered a body on the floor.

She remembered blood.

She remembered her father kneeling beside him.

And she remembered one more thing.

Someone else had been there.

A woman.

Victoria opened her eyes.
