Richard is searching.

He believes the child is an heir.

Another:

I will pretend Evelyn died.

The final entry:

If Anna survives, she must never come back.

Victoria looked up.

"Why?"

Evelyn sat down.

"Because Richard believed the child carried proof of his crime."

Victoria stared.

"What proof?"

Evelyn looked at Lily.

"Her blood."

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn opened another envelope.

Inside was a medical report.

Victoria read it.

Then she stopped.

"Impossible."

Lucy took the document.

"What?"

Victoria couldn't speak.

Lucy read.

Then looked at Michael.

"This says Evelyn wasn't Anna's biological daughter."

Silence.

Evelyn nodded.

"That's why your father wanted her."

Victoria stared.

"Then whose daughter was she?"

Evelyn looked at Lily.

"That's the question Anna spent her entire life trying to answer."

Lily stepped forward.

"She knew."

Evelyn shook her head.

"She suspected."

"Of what?"

"That Evelyn was the child of someone else."

"Who?"

Evelyn took another photograph.

It showed a young man.

Victoria recognized him.

She had seen his face in the underground archives.

Samuel Whitmore.

Her mother's supposedly dead brother.

Victoria whispered,

"Samuel."

Evelyn nodded.

"Your mother believed Evelyn was Samuel's daughter."

Lucy stared.

"But Samuel was killed before Evelyn was born."

"Exactly."

Victoria looked at the dates.

Something didn't make sense.

"Then how?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Samuel wasn't killed when everyone thought."

Victoria froze.

"What?"

"He disappeared."

"He was alive."

"For years."

"Where?"

Evelyn pointed toward the journal.

"He went to Europe."

Victoria read another entry.

Samuel contacted me.

He has proof Richard is stealing from the Whitmore trust.

He says he has a child.

A daughter.

Her name is Evelyn.

Victoria's hands began to shake.

"Then Evelyn is my mother's niece."

"Yes."

"Not Anna's daughter."

"Correct."

Victoria looked at the woman sitting across from them.

"You're my cousin."

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Lucy stared.

"So she's not our sister."

"No."

Lily's face showed relief and confusion.

"Then why did Anna raise her?"

Evelyn answered.

"Because Anna loved her."

Victoria closed her eyes.

The family tree had changed again.

Every assumption had collapsed.

Then Michael found another document.

A passport.

Samuel Whitmore.

Destination:

Charleston.

Date:

Three days before Evelyn's birth.

Michael looked up.

"Samuel came back."

Evelyn nodded.

"And then?"

"He disappeared again."

"Did he die?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"We never found his body."

Victoria stared.

"Then he could still be alive."

Evelyn said nothing.

Lucy looked toward the window.

"Is that what you've been hiding?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

"Then what?"

Evelyn looked at Victoria.

"The man you call Jonathan Hale isn't Jonathan Hale."

Victoria felt cold.

"We know."

"No."

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

"You don't."

She reached into the cabinet.

She pulled out a photograph.

An old one.

Two young men stood beside each other.

Richard Hale.

And Samuel Whitmore.

But something was wrong.

The faces were almost identical.

Victoria stared.

"That's not Samuel."

Evelyn shook her head.

"It's Jonathan."

Victoria's breathing stopped.

"The man we thought was Jonathan is Samuel."

Silence.

Lucy whispered,

"Then who was Richard?"

Evelyn answered,

"That's the question nobody asked."

Victoria looked at the photograph.

Two brothers.

One identity.

Two names.

One family fortune.

And decades of lies.

That night, they stayed at the old house.

Nobody slept.

They spread every document across the dining table.

The family history became a puzzle.

Pieces were missing.

Names had been changed.

Dates altered.

Birth records falsified.

Death certificates forged.

The Hale family had not merely hidden one secret.

They had rewritten their own history.

At three in the morning, Lily found something.

A diary.

Not Anna's.

Richard's.

She opened it.

The first pages contained business notes.

Then the writing changed.

I have finally solved the problem.

Victoria leaned over.

"What problem?"

Lily continued.

Samuel refuses to cooperate.

Evelyn knows too much.

Anna is becoming suspicious.

The next page:

The children complicate everything.

Another:

If I cannot control the inheritance, I will control the children.

Victoria felt sick.

She continued reading.

Then came a sentence that changed everything.

Anna's first child is not mine.

Victoria stared.

Lucy whispered,

"What?"

Michael took the diary.

He read.

Richard had written:

Lily belongs to another man.

That makes her dangerous.

Victoria looked at Lily.

"Your mother had another partner?"

Lily shook her head.

"She never told me."

Michael turned the page.

The name was partially erased.

Only three letters remained.

DAN.

Victoria whispered,

"Daniel."

Lily stared.

"That makes no sense."

Victoria shook her head.

"Daniel was your father."

"Yes."

"Then why would Richard call him another man?"

Michael looked at the date.

"This was written before Anna married Daniel."

Victoria stared.

Anna had been pregnant before marriage.

With Lily.

Daniel was probably the father.

But Richard had called Lily dangerous.

Why?

Then they found the answer.

Another page.

Lily carries the Whitmore blood.

Victoria froze.

Michael read the next line.

She is the rightful heir.

Lucy looked confused.

"To what?"

Victoria answered,

"The original trust."

Evelyn stepped into the room.

"Exactly."

Everyone turned.

She had been awake.

"You knew?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Anna discovered that Lily was the first direct descendant of the Whitmore line."

"But I'm a descendant too."

"Yes."

"So is Michael."

"Yes."

"Then why was Lily different?"

Evelyn sat down.

"Because the trust had a condition."

"What condition?"

"The first surviving child born to a female Whitmore descendant would inherit controlling interest."

Victoria understood.
