"Eleanor."
Anna nodded.
"Yes."
"Eleanor saw everything."
"Yes."
"Why did she stay silent?"
Anna's face hardened.
"Because Richard had something on her."
"What?"
Anna looked at Evelyn.
"The truth about Evelyn's birth."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"What truth?"
Anna looked at her.
"Your father wasn't Samuel."
Evelyn froze.
"What?"
Anna swallowed.
"Samuel believed you were his daughter."
"Then who was my father?"
Anna looked at Victoria.
Then back at Evelyn.
"Richard."
The room went silent.
Evelyn staggered backward.
"No."
Anna nodded.
"Richard was your father."
Evelyn shook her head violently.
"No."
"He and Samuel switched identities."
"Why?"
"Because Richard wanted access to the Whitmore inheritance."
Victoria stared.
The puzzle finally began to fit.
Richard had used Samuel's identity.
Samuel had disappeared.
Daniel had discovered the truth.
Anna had learned the truth.
Eleanor had helped conceal it.
And Evelyn was the living proof of Richard's betrayal.
But there was one question left.
Victoria asked:
"Where is Samuel?"
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
"Dead."
"Who killed him?"
Anna looked at Richard's diary.
Then she said:
"Daniel."
Victoria stared.
"What?"
"Daniel killed Samuel."
"Why?"
"Because Samuel was going to kill Richard."
Victoria couldn't understand.
"Then Daniel wasn't protecting Richard."
"No."
Anna shook her head.
"He was protecting you."
Victoria whispered,
"Why?"
"Because Daniel knew that if Richard died, the family would tear itself apart."
Anna paused.
"He believed he could expose Richard legally."
"But he failed."
"Yes."
"And Richard killed him."
Anna nodded.
"Then he made me disappear."
Victoria looked at the floor.
All those years.
All those lies.
All those deaths.
None of them had been random.
They had been connected.
A chain of fear.
A chain of silence.
A chain of people protecting one another until nobody remembered what they were protecting.
Then Lucy asked the question nobody had asked.
"Why did you come back now?"
Anna looked at her daughter.
"Because the person who started all of this is still alive."
Everyone froze.
Michael whispered,
"Who?"
Anna looked toward the vault door.
"The man who owns Hale House."
Victoria frowned.
"My father is dead."
Anna shook her head.
"Richard Hale died twenty-eight years ago."
"Then who owns it?"
Anna answered:
"His son."
Victoria's face went pale.
"Edward."
Anna nodded.
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"Edward is my cousin."
Anna's expression was filled with sorrow.
"Victoria..."
"He can't be."
"Edward is not your cousin."
Victoria stared.
Anna continued:
"Edward is Richard's son."
Victoria felt the ground disappear beneath her.
"But you said Evelyn was Richard's daughter."
"She was."
"Then Edward is..."
"Her brother."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Anna looked at Victoria.
"And he has spent his entire life trying to finish what his father started."
The vault suddenly shook.
A loud explosion echoed above them.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Lucy screamed.
Michael grabbed her.
Anna looked toward the door.
"They found us."
Victoria grabbed the diary.
"Then we move."
Anna shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"I didn't bring you here to escape."
She pointed toward the deepest part of the vault.
"I brought you here because there's one final door."
Victoria looked.
At the far end of the room stood a stone wall.
No door.
No handle.
Nothing.
Anna walked toward it.
She placed her hand against the stone.
Then she looked at Victoria.
"Your father believed he had hidden everything."
She smiled sadly.
"He forgot one thing."
"What?"
"Your mother was smarter than him."
Anna pressed the locket against the wall.
A click sounded.
The stone moved.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Cold air flowed through.
Anna stepped inside.
Victoria followed.
The others came behind her.
At the end of the passage was a room.
And inside the room was a desk.
On the desk sat a single envelope.
The name written across it was:
VICTORIA.
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting belonged to her father.
Victoria read the first line.
Then she stopped.
Her face became expressionless.
Lucy whispered,
"What does it say?"
Victoria looked at her family.
"It says Richard knew Anna would survive."
Michael stepped closer.
"What else?"
Victoria continued reading.
Her voice trembled.
"He says he didn't create the family secret."
Evelyn frowned.
"Then who did?"
Victoria looked at the final line.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"According to him..."
She swallowed.
"...the Hale family secret began more than one hundred years before he was born."
Silence.
Then Victoria turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
And the woman who knows the truth is your mother.
Victoria stared at the words.
Her mother had been dead for years.
Or so they believed.
Then Anna whispered:
"She's not dead."
Victoria slowly looked up.
"What?"
Anna's face had gone pale.
"Your mother is alive."
And somewhere above them, behind the stone walls of the ancient cemetery, a woman's voice began to sing an old lullaby.
A lullaby Victoria had heard only once in her childhood.
The lullaby her mother used to sing.
The lullaby Anna had always said belonged to nobody.
Victoria stood completely still.
Because she suddenly remembered something else.
A face.
A woman standing behind the nursery door.
A woman holding a baby.
And a whispered sentence:
"One day, my children will come looking for me."
The song stopped.
Then the voice spoke.
"Victoria."
Everyone froze.
The stone wall behind them began to open.
And the woman standing on the other side was not Eleanor.
Not Anna.
Not a stranger.
It was Victoria's mother.
Alive.
Older.
But unmistakably herself.
She looked at Victoria.
And smiled.
"My daughter."
Victoria couldn't move.
Her mother lifted one trembling hand.
"You're finally old enough to know the truth."
Then she looked at Lucy, Michael, Lily, Evelyn, and Anna.
"The family you thought was broken..."
She paused.
"...was never the family you were born into."
And behind her stood a second person.
A man Victoria recognized from the oldest photograph in the archive.
The man everyone believed had died more than sixty years ago.
Thomas Whitmore.
The first heir.
The first victim.
The man whose grave they had just opened.
Victoria stared at him.
He looked at her.
Then he said:
"Your father wasn't the first Hale to steal this family."
He stepped forward.
"He was the last."
And the ancient door slammed shut behind them.
