Sarah stopped. She didn't drop the box. She didn't step back. Her military training instantly kicked in, locking her emotions down into a cold, impenetrable calm. She tightened her grip on the cardboard, her dark eyes narrowing slightly as she analyzed the screaming woman in the puffer jacket. She recognized the situation for exactly what it was: an unhinged display of supreme entitlement.

Sarah stood her ground, her athletic frame towering slightly over the older woman. She refused to be intimidated on her own property. She tilted her chin up, looking Evelyn dead in the eye, and delivered her response with a calm, razor-sharp clarity that cut through the older woman's hysteria.

"Ma'am, these are authorized VA files for my work."

Sarah’s calm, rational explanation should have de-escalated the situation immediately. To a normal person, the mention of the Department of Veterans Affairs and authorized work files would be the end of the conversation. But to Evelyn, rationality was an insult. The older woman’s paranoid mind was incapable of processing the idea that this young, athletic woman in a mint-green sweater held a position of high federal clearance.

Evelyn's face flushed a deep, mottled red, clashing violently with her expensive silk scarf. Her eyes darted frantically up and down the quiet suburban street. The commotion had begun to draw an audience. Doors were cracking open. Neighbors were stepping out onto their pristine porches, their curiosity piqued by the shrill echoes of Evelyn’s aggressive demands.

This was exactly what Evelyn wanted. She thrived on an audience. She fed on the chaotic energy of a public spectacle where she could cast herself as the heroic protector of Oakridge Estates. She took a step back from Sarah, widening her stance, and began to perform for the growing crowd of onlookers. She wanted to publicly humiliate Sarah, to paint her as a dangerous criminal infiltrating their exclusive haven.
