She then turned her furious, triumphant gaze directly onto the police officer, issuing a direct command as if she outranked him.

"Officer, arrest her!" Evelyn demanded, her chest heaving with exertion. "She's been smuggling federal files into this house."

The veteran officer closed his car door with a heavy, metallic thud. He rested his hand casually near his radio, his face completely unreadable. He looked at Evelyn, whose blonde bob was trembling with self-righteous fury, and then he looked past her, directing his gaze up the driveway.

He saw Sarah. He took in the athletic posture, the unshakeable composure, and the way she held the heavy box with perfect, disciplined balance. He read the bold, black lettering on the side of the cardboard: VA DEATH BENEFIT FILE - OFFICIAL RECORD.

The officer had served two tours overseas before joining the police force. He knew the devastating weight of those boxes. He knew exactly what kind of clearance, what kind of immense responsibility, was required to handle the final records of fallen heroes. He didn't see a smuggler in a mint-green sweater. He recognized the unmistakable, quiet authority of a superior military officer.

Evelyn stood with her hands on her hips, her chin tilted up, waiting for the officer to draw his handcuffs and throw Sarah to the concrete. She waited for the violent validation of her paranoia.
