Evelyn threw her hands up, the off-white fabric of her puffer jacket crinkling loudly in the afternoon breeze. She had completely lost touch with reality, her accusations spinning wildly out of control, escalating from a simple noise complaint into a full-blown fabricated conspiracy.

As fate would have it, a black-and-white police cruiser was slowly patrolling down the oak-lined street, making its routine afternoon rounds. The vehicle's tires crunched softly against the asphalt as it approached Sarah's driveway.

Evelyn’s eyes lit up with a manic, predatory glee. She saw the police cruiser not as an instrument of peace, but as her own personal weapon, a tool she could wield to enforce her delusion. She sprinted toward the curb, her low-heeled pumps slapping against the pavement, waving her smartphone frantically in the air to flag the officer down.

The cruiser came to a smooth halt. The driver’s side door swung open, and a veteran police officer stepped out into the bright spring sunlight. He was an African American man in his early forties, his dark, tailored uniform perfectly pressed, his duty belt heavy with equipment. He possessed a stern, highly observant demeanor, his eyes immediately sweeping the scene to assess the threat level.

Evelyn didn't even give him a chance to speak. She pointed a trembling, accusatory finger back at Sarah, who was still standing calmly on the driveway, holding the heavy white cardboard box.
