THE OLD MAN WHO WALKED INTO THE BOARDROOM
Chapter 1
At 10:17 on a cold Monday morning, the executive boardroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was filled with people who were accustomed to getting what they wanted.
The Grand Regent was more than a hotel.
It was an institution.
For almost seventy years, its white stone facade had stood above the city like a monument to wealth.
Politicians stayed there.
Actors held private parties there.
International executives signed billion-dollar agreements beneath its crystal chandeliers.
And at the top of the organization sat Evelyn Harrington.
At forty-eight, Evelyn was one of the most respected hotel executives in the country.
She had inherited the Grand Regent from her father and transformed it from an aging luxury property into a global brand.
That morning, she sat at the head of a long black conference table.
Three senior executives sat opposite her.
Charts were spread across the table.
Financial projections covered the screens.
"We're ready to finalize the acquisition," said Richard Cole, the company's chief financial officer.
Evelyn looked at the numbers.
"You're certain?"
"Absolutely."
Richard smiled.
"The investors are expecting an announcement by Friday."
Another executive nodded.
"The new property will increase our regional portfolio by nearly twenty percent."
Evelyn leaned back.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
An elderly Black man stood in the doorway.
He looked completely out of place.
His hair was silver.
His face was lined with age.
He wore a dark, old-fashioned overcoat over a white shirt and burgundy tie.
In one hand, he carried a worn leather case.
He wasn't carrying a briefcase.
It looked more like an old family album.
The security officer behind him looked uncomfortable.
"Sir, you can't come in here."
The old man didn't answer.
Instead, he looked directly at Evelyn.
She stared at him.
Something about his face seemed familiar.
But she couldn't place it.
Richard stood.
"Who is this?"
The old man finally spoke.
"My name is Samuel Carter."
Richard frowned.
"And what exactly do you want?"
Samuel looked at him.
"I came to stop this meeting."
Richard laughed.
One of the other executives smiled.
Evelyn didn't.
She studied Samuel carefully.
"Stop the meeting?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Samuel slowly walked into the room.
"Because you're about to make a decision based on a lie."
The room went silent.
Richard's expression hardened.
"Sir, I don't know who you are, but you need to leave."
Samuel ignored him.
He looked at Evelyn.
"You should remember this place."
Evelyn frowned.
"I do."
"No."
Samuel shook his head.
"You remember the hotel."
"You don't remember what happened here."
Evelyn stared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Samuel placed the leather case on the table.
He opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
A young Black man stood beside a beautiful woman in front of the Grand Regent.
The photograph looked at least fifty years old.
