THE OLD MAN WHO WALKED INTO THE BOARDROOM
Chapter 2
Evelyn leaned forward.
Her eyes widened.
The young woman in the photograph looked almost exactly like her.
Except the photograph was decades old.
She looked at Samuel.
"Who is that?"
Samuel pointed at the young woman.
"Your mother."
Evelyn stopped breathing for a moment.
Then looked again.
The young man beside her mother was smiling.
She had never seen him before.
"Who is he?"
Samuel closed the album halfway.
"That's why I'm here."
Richard stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous."
Samuel turned toward him.
"No."
He slowly opened the album again.
"What's ridiculous is that you're about to sell a hotel built on a promise your family made sixty-two years ago."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"What promise?"
Samuel looked at her.
"A promise to my father."
He turned another page.
There were handwritten notes.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Receipts.
Newspaper clippings.
And then Evelyn saw a name.
Her grandfather.
Her eyes widened.
Samuel quietly said:
"Your family didn't build the Grand Regent alone."
He closed the album.
"My family helped build it."
Nobody spoke.
Then Samuel reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old phone.
"I think it's time you heard the voice of the man who knew the truth."
Evelyn couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.
Her mother had died when Evelyn was nineteen.
Her father had died fifteen years later.
Both had always spoken about the Grand Regent as a family achievement.
Her grandfather, James Harrington, had supposedly built the hotel from nothing.
That story had been repeated for decades.
It was printed in company histories.
It appeared in anniversary brochures.
It was even engraved on a bronze plaque in the lobby.
Founded by James Harrington, 1961.
But Samuel was telling her something different.
"Your grandfather wasn't alone," he said.
Evelyn slowly looked up.
"Who was your father?"
"Samuel Carter."
Richard interrupted.
"Ms. Harrington, this is absurd."
Evelyn raised a hand.
"Richard."
He stopped.
She turned back to Samuel.
"Tell me everything."
Samuel nodded.
"My father was a contractor."
"He had a small construction company."
"In 1960, your grandfather came to him."
"James Harrington had a vision."
"A hotel unlike anything the city had ever seen."
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
"What happened?"
"Your grandfather needed money."
Samuel opened another page.
"My father invested."
"How much?"
