THE OLD MAN WHO WALKED INTO THE BOARDROOM
Chapter 3
"Everything."
Evelyn frowned.
"Why?"
"Because they had an agreement."
Samuel pointed toward a handwritten document.
"Fifty percent ownership of the hotel."
Evelyn stared at the page.
"That's impossible."
"It happened."
"Then why doesn't the company have records of it?"
Samuel smiled sadly.
"Because your grandfather changed the records."
Richard stepped forward.
"That's a serious accusation."
Samuel looked at him.
"I know."
"Do you have proof?"
Samuel tapped the album.
"I've been collecting it for fifty-eight years."
Evelyn took the document.
The paper was yellow with age.
At the bottom were two signatures.
James Harrington.
Samuel Carter Sr.
The agreement was dated August 14, 1960.
Evelyn read the final paragraph.
Her hands began to shake.
"What does this mean?"
Samuel answered:
"It means your family didn't own everything."
Evelyn looked toward Richard.
"Does the current acquisition depend on the ownership of the Grand Regent?"
"Yes."
"Then if this document is valid..."
Richard's face became pale.
"The acquisition could be challenged."
Samuel nodded.
"Not just challenged."
"Stopped."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Why did you wait this long?"
Samuel's expression changed.
"My father died believing the truth would eventually come out."
He paused.
"I spent most of my life trying to make sure it did."
"Why now?"
Samuel looked directly at Evelyn.
"Because your father knew."
Evelyn froze.
"My father?"
Samuel nodded.
"He found out thirty years ago."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
Samuel's voice became softer.
"Because he was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of losing everything."
Evelyn looked down.
For the first time in her life, the history of her family felt like a stranger's story.
She turned another page.
There was a photograph of her father.
He was much younger.
Standing beside Samuel's father.
Both men were smiling.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence:
One day, the children will have to know.
Evelyn looked up.
"When did my father write this?"
Samuel answered:
"The night before he died."
Evelyn canceled the acquisition meeting.
The executives were furious.
Investors wanted answers.
Lawyers demanded documents.
Richard insisted the old agreement couldn't possibly be legitimate.
But Evelyn refused to proceed.
