The evening had begun with the customary elegance

of a Thorne Enterprises charity gala. The Grand Ballroom

of the Plaza was awash in the warm, golden glow of

thousands of crystal chandeliers. Champagne flowed freely,

and the city's elite mingled in their finest attire, their

laughter masking the quiet, ruthless negotiations that

always accompanied such gatherings. Marcus Thorne, CEO

and undisputed titan of the financial sector, stood near the

grand staircase, his sharp, calculating eyes scanning the

room. He had orchestrated this event to perfection, just as

he orchestrated every merger and acquisition. But tonight,

his mind was not on business. It was on his wife.

Khloe Thorne was the anchor to his tumultuous life.

Six months pregnant, she radiated a serene beauty that

drew the eyes of everyone in the room. She wore a

stunning emerald gown that accented her growing curves,

her blonde hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.

For the past hour, Marcus had watched her gracefully

navigate the complex social dynamics of New York's high

society, her gentle smile diffusing tensions and winning

over even the most cynical of his rivals.

But as the night wore on, Khloe had excused herself to

find a quiet moment away from the overwhelming noise

and flashing cameras. She had retreated to the private VIP

suite on the second floor, a sanctuary reserved for the

Thorne family and their closest associates. Marcus had

intended to follow her shortly, delayed only by a relentless

group of foreign investors.

He didn't know that Isabella Rossi had followed Khloe

first.

Isabella was a ghost from a past Marcus had

aggressively buried. The heiress to the Rossi shipping

empire, she had once assumed that her family's wealth and

her own cunning would secure her a place at Marcus's

side. When Marcus chose Khloe—a woman whose kindness

and integrity starkly contrasted with Isabella's

manipulative nature—Isabella's pride had been fatally

wounded. Tonight, fueled by champagne and a bitter,

festering jealousy, she had cornered Khloe in the secluded

suite.

Elaine Parker, the veteran event coordinator, had

been in the adjacent hallway checking the floral

arrangements when she heard the voices rising. She had

peeked into the suite, intending to intervene, but the speed

at which the argument escalated had frozen her in place.

Isabella's words had been venomous, slicing through the

quiet room, demanding to know what Marcus saw in

Khloe, accusing her of trapping him with a child.

Khloe had maintained her composure, her voice

steady but firm, asking Isabella to leave. But composure

was the last thing Isabella wanted. She wanted a reaction.

She wanted to tear down the perfect image Khloe

presented to the world.

For several agonizing seconds, no one moved.

Marcus Thorne felt as though the room had been

drained of air. His gaze remained fixed on Khloe, who lay

curled on the polished marble floor, both arms wrapped

protectively around the life growing inside her. A strand of

blonde hair clung to her tear-streaked face, and every

shallow breath she managed sounded painfully forced.

"Marcus..." she whispered.

The sound of her voice snapped him back to reality.

He crossed the room in three hurried strides and

dropped to his knees beside her.

"I'm here," he said, his voice shaking. "Don't move."

His trembling hands hovered uncertainly above her,

terrified that touching her might somehow make things

worse. He had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without

flinching, stared down ruthless competitors, and survived

corporate wars that had destroyed other executives.

None of it prepared him for seeing his wife in pain.

Behind him, Isabella Rossi's sobs grew louder.

"I told her to calm down!" she cried, wiping away

tears that appeared almost too quickly. "She became

hysterical. She came after me first."

Elaine Parker frowned.

She had coordinated elite charity galas for nearly

twenty years. Wealthy donors argued. Celebrities created

scenes. Politicians lied with practiced smiles.
