Evelyn continued her impromptu lecture on constitutional law. “A vague call from a
neighbor who dislikes the way I look on my own property is not, by itself, probable
cause. It does not give you authority to detain me, search me, enter my home, or demand
identification.”
Officer Reed’s eyes widened. He recognized the verbiage. Harlan knew it too, but men
like Harlan often mistook being corrected for being challenged.
“Listen,” Harlan snapped. “I don’t know what video you watched online, but I am not
standing here debating case law with you. Put the mug down. Step off the porch. Show
ID.”
When she didn't move, Harlan unclipped his handcuffs. The sound was small, metallic,
