“Stay out of it,” Harlan hissed.
Evelyn set her mug on the porch rail. Very slowly. Very deliberately. Then she faced
Harlan fully.
“Sergeant Frank Harlan,” she said, reading his nameplate. “I am going to give you one
chance to stop making this mistake.”
“You threatening me?”
“No. I am warning you.” Her voice lost all its casual warmth. It became the voice of a
woman who sentenced powerful men without raising her volume. “If you put those cuffs
on me unlawfully, you will spend the rest of your career explaining why you ignored
constitutional limits. Call your watch commander.”
“I’m not calling a supervisor for a routine suspicious person call,” Harlan scoffed.
“You should.”
