This is Malcolm Reed. I wanted to thank you for standing up earlier. If you ever need anything, please reach out.

Elena stared at the glowing pixels. Her heart hammered in her chest. She typed slowly. Mr. Reed, I’m sorry about tonight. That behavior isn’t uncommon here. Executives treat people terribly, and nobody ever speaks up. I’ve seen things that would shock you.

The reply was instantaneous. Meet me.

The following afternoon, Malcolm sat in the back corner of a crowded, independent coffee shop six blocks from the Halberg Grand. The overcast Chicago sky cast a flat, gray light through the windows. He watched the entrance carefully.

Elena arrived fifteen minutes late. She wore a heavy coat and scanned the room with terrified, darting eyes before sliding into the booth opposite him. Dark circles bruised the skin under her eyes.

"I shouldn't be here," she whispered, her hands tightly wrapped around a paper coffee cup. "If they find out I'm talking to you..."

"They won't," Malcolm said, his voice a soothing, grounded anchor. "Tell me what you've seen, Elena."

She looked at the teenagers sharing earbuds at the next table, then leaned in. "It’s been going on for years. Executives would bring me complaint files and tell me to 'lose' them in the HR system. Sexual harassment reports, discrimination cases, workplace injuries. They’d make the digital copies disappear."

"How many times?" Malcolm asked softly.

"Dozens. Maybe hundreds. Vanessa was the worst. She’d humiliate staff members during busy shifts—waitresses, housekeeping, front desk clerks. She’d scream at them, threaten their jobs."

"And when people complained?"

"Nothing. Richard protected her." Elena pulled her phone out, her fingers trembling. "Look at this. A server named David Kim threatened to sue after Vanessa physically pushed him in front of guests. He had security footage."

"What happened to him?"

Elena’s expression darkened into sheer terror. "He stopped showing up. His apartment was cleared out. His phone disconnected. Nobody heard from him again."

A deep chill ran down Malcolm's spine. Elena reached into her purse and slid a small, silver flash drive across the table.

"I copied payroll records and executive schedules," she said. "Not everything, but enough to show the patterns of payouts and silenced victims."

Malcolm pocketed the drive, his eyes locked on hers. "Why are you risking this?"

"Because somebody needs to stop them," Elena’s voice hardened. "I stayed quiet because I needed the insurance for my mother’s medical bills. But what Vanessa did to you... it was pure evil."

Saturday morning, sunlight streamed relentlessly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Richard Halberg’s penthouse office overlooking Lake Michigan. The 68-year-old billionaire stood rigid behind his mahogany desk. Three massive television screens on the wall played the viral video on an endless, mocking loop.

Vanessa sat slouched in a leather chair, still wearing her wrinkled emerald gown. Her makeup was smeared, making her look fragile and small in the cavernous room built as a monument to corporate power.

"Explain this disaster," Richard hissed, his voice dangerously quiet.

"Daddy, I didn't know who he was!" Vanessa cried, her hands shaking around a porcelain coffee cup. "He looked like he didn't belong! He was so... smug."
