Woman Pours Drink On Black Man At Bar—Froze When He Said “You Just Cost Your Company $100M”
Chapter 5
Richard walked around the desk, his footsteps silent on the thick carpet. He stopped, towering over her. "Malcolm Reed isn't just an investor. He controls the one-hundred-million dollars of capital that keeps this company operational. We were already bleeding money, Vanessa. The Miami project is dead. London fell through. Reed's money was the only thing preventing a complete financial collapse."
He leaned in close. "And you publicly humiliated him because you didn't like his polo shirt."
Vanessa began to sob openly. "I'm sorry. I'll apologize. I'll fix it!"
"It's too late for apologies," Richard said coldly, turning his back on her. "I will handle Mr. Reed."
By Monday morning, Richard’s counter-attack was fully deployed. Malcolm sat in his corner office at Reed Capital, watching the news channels flip the narrative in real-time.
Malcolm Reed’s sudden withdrawal raises serious questions about market manipulation, a financial analyst claimed on CNN. Did he orchestrate this viral moment to short Halberg stock?
On Fox Business, it was worse. Reed built his fortune by targeting vulnerable companies. His military background suggests a man comfortable with aggressive, predatory tactics.
Jordan Pike entered Malcolm's office, his usually immaculate suit looking slightly rumpled. He dropped a thick folder onto the glass desk.
"It's getting worse," Jordan said, adjusting his glasses. "Richard has connections everywhere. They're planting stories about your military discharge. They're framing your early investments as hostile takeovers of minority-owned businesses."
Malcolm stood up and walked to the window, looking down at the crawling traffic of the financial district. "They want to make me an example. Show the world what happens when you cross them."
"We have bigger problems," Jordan said grimly. "I analyzed the data Elena gave us. Halberg has been moving money. Forty-seven million dollars funneled through offshore shell companies in the Caymans. Richard has been draining his own company, preparing to let it collapse while he escapes with stolen pension funds."
Before Malcolm could process the magnitude of the fraud, his phone rang. The caller ID showed a blocked number.
"Malcolm Reed," he answered.
"Mr. Reed. This is Richard Halberg." The voice was smooth, cultured, and laced with absolute poison. "I believe we need to speak. Privately."
Malcolm refused Richard's buyout offer—a board seat and a 20% premium on his initial investment to make the scandal go away. When Malcolm revealed he knew about the offshore accounts, Richard had promised outright war.
That night, Elena called Malcolm in a complete panic. Halberg security had discovered her digital footprints in the HR system. Her apartment had been ransacked. She was on the run.
"Meet me at the abandoned rail station beneath Millennium Park," she told him, her voice echoing in an empty space. "11 PM. Come alone."
Malcolm arrived at the underground station just before eleven. It felt like a concrete tomb. Heavy commuter trains thundered overhead, shaking dust from the cracked ceiling and casting strobing shadows through the ventilation grates. The air smelled heavily of diesel and stagnant water.
"Malcolm."
Elena emerged from the deep shadows of Platform 3. She wore a dark hoodie, her face pale and terrified. She shoved a heavy external hard drive into his hands.
"Everything is on here," she said, her breath pluming in the damp air. "Financial fraud, offshore accounts, bribes. But it's worse. The employee who disappeared—David Martinez. I found internal emails. Richard ordered security to plant drugs in his locker. They ruined his life. Three months later, David jumped into the Chicago River. The executives joked about it in their emails."
