“Mr. Mercer.”

“Linda.”

She looked toward the marina.

“It is still beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“It should have been the community's proudest achievement.”

I looked at the docks.

“It was built on my land.”

“I know.”

“You knew then?”

She didn't answer.

The lake moved quietly beneath us.

Finally, she said, “I knew there were questions.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Her jaw tightened.

Then she closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The word was barely audible.

“I knew enough to stop.”

“And you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the docks.

At the slips.

The lights.

The stone walls.

The entire monument to her refusal to ask permission.

“Because if I stopped,” she said, “people would know I'd promised more than I could deliver.”

“So you kept spending their money.”

“I told myself the records would work out.”

“Records don't work out.”

She nodded.

“They say what they say.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

The apology wasn't enough.

It could never undo the millions spent.

It couldn't undo the lawsuits.

It couldn't undo the environmental work.

It couldn't undo what she had done to the community.

But it was the first honest thing I had ever heard her say.

“I accept your apology,” I told her.

Her eyes lifted.

“Not because it fixes anything.”

“I know.”

“But because the paperwork already did what it needed to do.”

She looked down.

Then she walked away.

Neither of us said goodbye.

The Deed

Linda sold her house the following spring.

The listing described Holloway Shores as a luxury lake community with leased marina access.

Leased.

That one word was worth every legal bill.

The marina still operates.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Under rules my attorney drafted.

Every year, the HOA sends me proof of insurance.

Environmental compliance records.

Maintenance plans.

Slip agreements.

Lease payments.

I review them.
