He didn't want to be known as the boy whose mother was mayor.
But eventually, he agreed to speak at the community meeting.
He stood beside his mother.
His hands trembled slightly.
“My name is Alex.”
The room became silent.
“I wasn't doing anything that afternoon.”
He looked at the audience.
“I was just waiting for my mom.”
He paused.
“But suddenly there were police officers around me.”
His voice became quieter.
“I was scared.”
Several people lowered their eyes.
Alex continued:
“I kept thinking about what my mom had taught me.”
He took a breath.
“Keep your hands visible.”
The room was silent.
Then Alex said:
“I shouldn't have to be afraid of being seen as dangerous when I'm doing nothing wrong.”
Eleanor attended the meeting.
She could have stayed home.
She could have defended herself.
She could have blamed misunderstanding.
Instead, she stood.
“I was wrong.”
