The HOA Sent an Excavator to Tear Apart an Old Farmer’s Bridge — He Took 21 Photos and Walked Back to His Filing Cabinet
Chapter 2
"That bridge is a liability," she countered, pointing a manicured finger toward the creek. "It is an eyesore, it is unsafe, and it crosses into our airspace. It brings down the property value of every home facing the park. We have taken a vote."
"A vote among yourselves to tear down something that ain't yours?" Arthur chuckled, shaking his head. "That's a neat trick. But the bridge stays. It’s on my deed, it’s my access to the lower pasture, and it’s not coming down."
"We have authorization," Eleanor lied, bluffing with the confidence of someone who had never been told 'no'. "We have deemed it an abandoned structure. If you do not remove it by the end of the week, the Association will remove it for you, and we will send you the bill for the demolition."
Arthur finally stopped wiping the wrench. He looked at her, his eyes cold and calm. "If you touch that bridge, you'll regret it. That’s not a threat, ma'am. That's a guarantee."
Eleanor scoffed, turned on her heel, and marched back down the driveway. She was convinced the old man was all bluff. After all, who was he? Just a stubborn relic standing in the way of progress. The HOA had a sizable legal fund, a retainer with a fierce law firm, and a superiority complex. They were untouchable.
Arthur watched them leave. He didn't yell. He didn't call the police. He simply walked back into his house, went into his dusty office, and looked at a heavy, gray metal filing cabinet sitting in the corner. He patted it once, then went back to his tractor.
Friday arrived with the heavy heat of mid-summer. Arthur was in his kitchen, pouring his second cup of black coffee, when he felt it. A low, rhythmic vibration coming through the floorboards. He knew the sound of heavy machinery. He owned enough of it. But none of his engines were running.
He set his mug down, walked to the porch, and looked toward the creek. There, on the subdivision's side of Silver Run, was a massive yellow excavator. Its treads were tearing up the pristine sod of the HOA park. Standing safely out of the way, wearing a triumphant smile and holding a clipboard, was Eleanor Vance. A small crowd of curious homeowners had gathered behind her.
The excavator’s massive hydraulic arm reached out, extending over the creek. The operator, a contractor who had clearly been assured that everything was legal and above board, positioned the steel bucket against the side of the wooden bridge.
