A message appeared.
You should have stayed out of this, Olivia.
A second message followed.
By tonight, nobody will believe a word you say.
Olivia slowly placed the phone on the table.
Then she looked at Walker.
"How many people have seen that broadcast?"
"Millions, probably."
"Good."
Walker frowned.
"Good?"
Olivia's expression changed.
For the first time that morning, she smiled.
"They've just made their biggest mistake."
"What mistake?"
"They've made this public."
She picked up the flash drive.
"They wanted to destroy me quietly. Instead, they've created a public case involving a federal prosecutor, a police corruption scandal, missing witnesses, and an attempted cover-up."
Walker understood.
"If we release the evidence—"
"Not just the evidence. Everything. The original recordings, the payment ledger, Sarah's testimony, and Porter's account."
Mitchell looked concerned.
"What if they try to stop us?"
Olivia walked toward the door.
"Then they'll have to explain to the entire country why they're trying to silence us."
She stopped and turned back.
"Thomas, contact every independent federal office you trust. Captain, make sure the original nightclub recordings are preserved. Sarah, I need you to prepare to testify."
Sarah nodded.
"And you?" Walker asked.
Olivia looked at the television, where her photograph was still displayed.
"I'm going to find James Porter."
She paused.
"And then we're going to bring down everyone involved in Project Nightfall."
Outside, the first news vans were already gathering near the federal building.
The story had begun spreading across the country.
But Olivia knew the most dangerous hours were still ahead.
Because Michael Grant had spent four years preparing to destroy anyone who threatened his operation.
And now he knew that Olivia Bennett was still alive, still investigating, and closer than ever to discovering the truth.
At 2:37 p.m., another message arrived.
This time, it contained no photograph and no threat.
Only a name.
JUDGE ELEANOR WHITMORE.
Beneath it was a single sentence.
Ask her what happened to her husband twenty years ago.
Olivia read it twice.
Then she looked at Walker.
"Thomas, I think we've been investigating the wrong beginning."
Walker frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She handed him the phone.
"Project Nightfall may have started four years ago, but the people behind it have been connected for much longer."
Walker examined the message.
"Twenty years?"
Olivia nodded.
"And I think Judge Whitmore knows exactly why."
Neither of them realized that, at that very moment, Judge Whitmore was sitting alone in her chambers, staring at an old photograph.
The photograph showed her husband standing beside a younger Robert Harlan.
And written on the back were four words that had haunted her for two decades:
THE NIGHT EVERYTHING DISAPPEARED.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore had spent twenty-three years protecting the integrity of the justice system. She had presided over murder trials, corruption cases, organized crime investigations, and disputes involving some of the wealthiest people in the country.
Yet there was one case she had never discussed publicly.
A case involving her husband.
And a night that had changed her life forever.
At 2:45 p.m., she was still sitting in her chambers, holding the old photograph.
Her husband, Daniel Whitmore, had been a respected investigative journalist. Twenty years earlier, he had been investigating a network of corrupt police officials and businessmen who were secretly selling confidential information to private companies.
One evening, Daniel had left their home carrying a briefcase.
He had promised to return before midnight.
He never did.
Three days later, authorities found his abandoned vehicle near an industrial district. His briefcase was missing, and there was no sign of a struggle.
The police concluded that he had probably left the country voluntarily.
Eleanor had never believed that explanation.
She had spent years searching for answers, but every lead eventually disappeared. Witnesses changed their statements. Documents went missing. Officials who had promised to help suddenly refused to speak.
Eventually, she stopped asking questions publicly.
But she never stopped looking.
Now, twenty years later, the same names were appearing again.
Robert Harlan.
Victor Kane.
And Michael Grant.
Her telephone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown caller.
"Judge Whitmore speaking."
A familiar voice answered.
"Your Honor, this is Olivia Bennett."
Eleanor immediately stood.
"Olivia? What's happening?"
"I need to ask you something about your husband."
Silence.
Eleanor slowly closed the door to her chambers.
"What have you discovered?"
"We found a photograph of Daniel Whitmore with Robert Harlan. The photograph appears to have been taken shortly before Daniel disappeared."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I was afraid this day would come."
"Your Honor, I believe your husband was investigating the same organization we're investigating now."
