“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she thought the account was only a temporary holding place. She didn't realize the people behind Nightfall had made it the center of their financial operation.”

Olivia shook her head.

“That still doesn't explain why she disappeared from my life.”

Thomas took a slow breath.

“After I vanished, Elizabeth tried to contact Daniel Whitmore. She had copies of several financial records, including documents that could have exposed Caldwell. But before she could deliver them, she was threatened. They told her that if she went to the authorities, you would be taken away from her.”

“And she believed them?”

“She was your mother. She would have done anything to keep you safe.”

Olivia looked back at the monitor.

“Then why is she still involved?”

Thomas had no answer.

A sudden warning appeared on the screen.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

Rebecca looked up.

“Someone is inside the system.”

The lights flickered.

A new message appeared:

REMOTE PURGE COMMAND RECEIVED.

Walker leaned over the keyboard.

“Someone is trying to destroy the archive from outside.”

“Can you stop it?” Olivia asked.

“I can try.”

He began typing rapidly, opening one security window after another.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Olivia, I wouldn't waste your time.”

Michael Grant.

His voice was calm, almost amused.

“You have spent your entire career believing that evidence can defeat corruption. You still haven't learned the most important lesson.”

Olivia stepped closer to the microphone.

“What's that?”

“Evidence only matters when someone is willing to believe it.”

“You're afraid of what's in this archive.”

Grant laughed.

“I'm afraid of nothing.”

“Then why are you trying to destroy it?”

“Because I know what happens when people discover the truth. They don't become heroes. They become targets.”

Olivia looked at the documents on the screen.

“Daniel Whitmore became a target because he refused to stay silent. My father became a target because he refused to keep stealing money for you. Sarah Miller became a target because she found the evidence you buried.”

“And now you're becoming one,” Grant replied. “The difference is that I can still give you a way out.”

“What do you want?”

“Bring me the ledger. Leave the archive. Your father can disappear again, and your mother can return home. I'll even arrange for the charges against you to be dismissed.”

Olivia almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe you?”

“I expect you to understand that you cannot win.”

The transmission ended.

At that moment, Walker shouted.

“I'm in!”

The progress bar reached seventy-two percent.

Rebecca checked the corridor.

“We have company.”

Heavy footsteps echoed beyond the archive entrance.

A voice shouted an order.

“Secure every exit! Nobody leaves this building!”

Porter raised his weapon.

“Caldwell's men?”

“Probably,” Rebecca answered. “And they aren't coming to negotiate.”

Walker glanced at the screen.

“Eighty percent.”

Olivia looked at the countdown.

04:38

“We need another way out.”

Daniel Whitmore pointed toward a narrow passage behind the server cabinets.

“There is a second tunnel. It leads to the old courthouse basement.”

Porter frowned.

“That tunnel was blocked.”

“Not anymore,” Daniel said. “They reopened it when they brought me here.”

Thomas picked up the metal box.

“Then we take the evidence and go.”

“Not yet,” Walker said. “The transfer is almost complete.”

A loud crash shook the archive.

Someone was trying to break through the main door.

Rebecca moved toward the entrance.

“I'll hold them here.”

Olivia shook her head.

“You're not staying behind.”

“Someone has to buy you time.”

“Then we all buy each other time. Nobody gets left behind.”

Rebecca gave her a brief, determined smile.

“That's exactly what I was hoping you'd say.”

The transfer reached ninety percent.

Walker opened another window.

“There's something strange here.”

“What?” Olivia asked.

“The account registered in your name has been receiving money for twenty years. But it hasn't been used for ordinary transactions.”

He enlarged the records.

“Every deposit came from a different shell company. The amounts were small at first, then increased dramatically after the original Nightfall operation.”

“Who has access?”

Walker studied the authorization list.

“Your mother. Your father. And one other person.”

“Who?”

He looked up.

“Senator Richard Caldwell.”

Olivia stared at the screen.

“Why would Caldwell need access to an account in my name?”

Thomas stepped closer.

“Because the account wasn't created to hold money for you. It was created to hide money behind you.”

Olivia felt sick.

“They used my identity.”

“Yes,” Thomas said. “Your name gave them a clean financial record. You were a child. You had no political connections, no criminal history, and no reason for anyone to suspect that your identity was being used.”
