"He told us you contacted him. He gave us the information you left behind."

The lock moved.

The door opened a few inches.

A woman appeared.

Her face was pale, and her hair was tied back carelessly.

Olivia recognized her immediately.

Sarah Miller.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Sarah looked beyond Olivia and noticed the federal agents.

"You brought people."

"I did."

"I told you to come alone."

"And I decided I wasn't going to risk another disappearance."

Sarah looked angry.

"You don't understand. They'll kill everyone involved."

Olivia nodded.

"Then help me understand."

Sarah studied her face.

Finally, she opened the door.

"Come inside."

The house was almost empty.

There was a mattress on the floor, a small table, and several boxes filled with documents.

Sarah led Olivia into the kitchen.

"I have been waiting for someone to believe me for two months."

Olivia sat down.

"Tell me what happened."

Sarah looked toward the window.

"Deputy Chief Harlan wasn't just taking money. He was selling information about people who were supposed to be protected by the police department."

"Who was buying it?"

"Victor Kane."

"Why?"

"Because Kane's company was being investigated for illegal surveillance contracts. He needed access to police databases to identify witnesses, investigators, and anyone who might testify against him."

Olivia leaned forward.

"And Project Nightfall?"

Sarah closed her eyes.

"That was the operation they created to eliminate the investigation."

Olivia felt her stomach tighten.

"Eliminate how?"

Sarah looked directly at her.

"By destroying evidence, intimidating witnesses, and making honest investigators look corrupt."

She paused.

"And if that didn't work, they planned to make certain people disappear."

Olivia thought about Detective Porter.

"Was James Porter killed because of this?"

Sarah nodded slowly.

"He discovered the original financial records. He was going to testify."

"Who killed him?"

"I don't know."

"Did Harlan order it?"

Sarah hesitated.

"Not directly."

"Then who?"

Sarah reached into a box and removed a photograph.

It showed three men standing beside a black vehicle.

Olivia recognized Harlan immediately.

The second man was Victor Kane.

But the third man was someone she had never expected to see.

Her former supervisor.

Michael Grant.

Olivia stared at the photograph.

"When was this taken?"

"Two weeks before Detective Porter died."

Sarah placed another document on the table.

"This is the original payment authorization."

Olivia examined it.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Michael Grant.

But there was something else.

The document contained a handwritten note.

If Bennett continues, activate the contingency plan.

Olivia slowly lowered the paper.

"What contingency plan?"

Sarah looked at her with frightened eyes.

"You."

The room became silent.

"They were planning to frame you," Sarah continued. "They wanted to make it look like you had accepted money to protect certain suspects. They had fabricated documents, altered financial records, and even arranged for someone to testify that you had threatened a witness."

Olivia felt the weight of the revelation settle over her.

The nightclub incident.

The threatening messages.

The photograph of her apartment.

They were not isolated events.

They were part of a carefully organized attempt to discredit her before she could expose the conspiracy.

Sarah leaned closer.

"There's one more thing."

Olivia looked at her.

"What?"

Sarah lowered her voice.

"Michael Grant knows where you are right now."

Before Olivia could respond, Walker's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean the building is surrounded?"

He looked at Olivia.

"Someone has identified this location."

Sarah stood abruptly.

"They're here."

Outside, an engine started.

Then another.

Olivia moved toward the window.

Three black SUVs had stopped at the end of the street.

Their doors opened simultaneously.

Several men stepped out.

They weren't wearing police uniforms.

But Olivia recognized the insignia on one man's jacket.

It belonged to Victor Kane's private security company.

Walker reached for his radio.

"All units, we have unidentified armed personnel approaching the property. Maintain cover and prepare to secure the witness."

Olivia turned toward Sarah.

"Is there another exit?"

Sarah nodded toward the back of the house.

"Through the basement."

Walker looked at the front window.

"They're moving."

Olivia took Sarah's hand.

"Listen to me. Whatever happens, you stay with us."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"I told you they would come."

Olivia tightened her grip.

"And now they have made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

"They came directly to the people who have the evidence."

A loud impact shook the front door.

Walker drew his weapon.

"Everyone move!"

The lights suddenly went out.

Someone outside shouted an order.

Then came the sound of breaking glass.

Olivia guided Sarah toward the basement stairs while Walker and the agents secured the hallway.
