Jason held her tightly.
“I thought I'd never see you again,” he whispered.
Sarah began crying.
“I thought they had killed you.”
“They tried.”
He looked over her shoulder toward Olivia.
“But you didn't let them win.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“You helped make sure they couldn't.”
Jason shook his head.
“I only survived because Sarah refused to give up.”
Sarah looked at her brother.
“And I only survived because other people refused to abandon me.”
For the first time in months, the two siblings could imagine a future that did not revolve around hiding.
Across the room, Thomas Bennett sat beside Elizabeth. They had barely spoken since the confrontation in the vault.
Olivia approached them.
“Are you both all right?”
Elizabeth nodded.
Thomas looked at his daughter.
“We need to talk.”
Olivia sat down opposite them.
“I know.”
Her father rubbed his forehead.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
He gave a sad smile.
“I deserved that.”
Olivia looked at her mother.
“And you?”
Elizabeth lowered her eyes.
“I know I made terrible decisions. I convinced myself that I could protect you by keeping you ignorant. I thought that if I carried the secrets alone, you would never have to suffer because of them.”
“But I suffered anyway.”
“I know.”
“You both made decisions about my life without asking me.”
Thomas nodded.
“You're right.”
Olivia took a breath.
“I can't pretend that everything is fine just because you're both alive. I need time.”
Elizabeth reached across the table but stopped before touching her daughter's hand.
“Take all the time you need.”
Olivia looked at her parents.
“For now, I just want to know that you won't disappear again.”
Thomas answered immediately.
“I won't.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Neither will I.”
Olivia did not embrace them. Not yet.
But she did not walk away either.
For that night, it was enough.
The following morning, the first consequences of Project Nightfall became public.
News organizations across the country reported that a secret financial network had been operating for decades. The released documents revealed payments to police officials, private contractors, politicians, and senior government employees.
Several former officers were arrested.
Deputy Chief Robert Harlan was taken into custody at his residence after investigators discovered evidence linking him to the intimidation of witnesses and the falsification of police reports.
Victor Kane attempted to flee the country but was stopped at an international airport. His private security company was immediately placed under investigation.
Michael Grant was arrested inside the underground control facility.
Director Reynolds was detained after independent investigators recovered messages proving that he had ordered the destruction of evidence and attempted to obstruct the investigation.
Senator Richard Caldwell's arrest created an immediate political crisis.
His legal team announced that he denied every allegation. However, the financial records, recordings, and testimony from multiple witnesses made it increasingly difficult for him to maintain that position.
Arthur Bennett was transferred to a secure federal detention facility.
He refused to answer questions.
But the investigators had more than enough evidence to begin building their case.
The public release had changed everything.
For the first time, the people behind Project Nightfall could no longer decide which records would survive and which witnesses would disappear.
Yet Olivia knew the investigation was far from over.
The original files contained thousands of names. Some belonged to people who had knowingly participated in the conspiracy. Others belonged to individuals who had been threatened or manipulated.
Separating guilt from coercion would take months, perhaps years.
And one question remained unanswered.
Why had Arthur selected Olivia as the final beneficiary?
Three days after the arrests, Olivia visited Judge Eleanor Whitmore.
The judge was sitting beside Daniel in a quiet hospital room. His physical condition had improved, although twenty years of imprisonment had left him weak.
When Olivia entered, Eleanor stood.
“Come in.”
Daniel looked up.
“Olivia.”
She approached his bed.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like a man who has spent twenty years underground and suddenly discovered that daylight is rather unpleasant.”
Olivia smiled.
“That's understandable.”
Eleanor placed a folder on the table.
“I wanted you to see something.”
“What is it?”
“Daniel's original testimony.”
Olivia opened the folder.
The document was dated twenty years earlier. It described the creation of Project Nightfall and identified several individuals who had authorized the first operation.
She read through the pages.
Then she stopped.
One paragraph had been highlighted.
The original purpose of the financial network was to conceal payments made to informants who were assisting in the investigation of organized criminal groups. The operation was intended to remain temporary.
Olivia looked up.
“Was that true?”
Daniel nodded.
