"Officer Brooks, you should probably stop giving orders that you have no authority to enforce."

His face turned red.

"You think you're smarter than me?"

"No. I think you should reconsider your decisions."

He grabbed her wrist for a third time.

And then everything changed.

A voice came from the entrance.

"Brooks! What the hell are you doing?"

All three officers turned around.

A middle-aged man in a dark suit had entered the nightclub. Behind him stood two security personnel.

Officer Brooks immediately straightened his uniform.

"Captain Mitchell. We have a situation."

The captain looked toward Olivia.

Then he looked at Brooks.

His expression changed instantly.

"Release her."

Brooks blinked.

"Sir?"

"I said release her. Right now."

"But, Captain, she was interfering with—"

"Did you hear what I just said?"

Brooks slowly removed his hand from Olivia's wrist.

The captain approached her.

"Ms. Bennett, are you all right?"

Olivia adjusted her sleeve.

"I'm fine, Captain. But I believe you and I need to have a very serious conversation."

The officers exchanged confused looks.

Captain Mitchell turned toward them.

"Do you know who this woman is?"

Nobody answered.

"She is the federal prosecutor who has been reviewing the misconduct complaints involving this department."

The nightclub fell completely silent.

Brooks stared at Olivia.

For the first time that evening, the confidence disappeared from his face.

And Olivia was not finished.

She looked at the captain and asked one question.

"Before we discuss what happened tonight, can you explain why three officers entered a private establishment, accused an innocent woman of suspicious activity, and attempted to arrest her without identifying a lawful reason?"

Captain Mitchell swallowed.

Because he knew something Olivia didn't.

Officer Brooks had not entered the nightclub by accident.

Someone had specifically instructed him to find her.

And that person was someone Olivia had been investigating for months.

The truth was about to become much more complicated than a confrontation inside a nightclub.

Captain Mitchell stood motionless for several seconds. The noise of the nightclub had faded into the background, and every person inside seemed to be waiting for his next words.

Olivia Bennett watched him carefully.

She had learned something important during her years as a federal prosecutor: people often revealed more through their silence than through their explanations.

"Captain," she said calmly, "you seem surprised to see me here."

Mitchell forced a nervous smile.

"Not surprised, Ms. Bennett. I simply wasn't expecting to encounter you tonight."

"That's understandable. I wasn't expecting to encounter your officers either."

He glanced toward Brooks.

"Daniel, explain exactly what happened."

Brooks cleared his throat.

"Captain, we received information about a possible disturbance. When we arrived, this woman became aggressive and refused to cooperate."

Olivia raised an eyebrow.

"That's not what happened."

Brooks ignored her.

"She questioned our authority, refused several lawful commands, and attempted to interfere with our investigation."

Captain Mitchell turned toward Olivia.

"Is that accurate?"

"No."

"Would you like to explain?"

"Certainly. Your officer approached me without identifying any specific violation. He ordered me to leave, refused to explain why, grabbed my wrist, and threatened to arrest me. When I requested his name, he mocked me. When I asked for the legal basis of his actions, he became increasingly aggressive."

She paused.

"And there are cameras recording everything."

Mitchell looked toward the ceiling.

"Are those cameras functioning?"

The bartender answered immediately.

"Yes, Captain. Every camera is working. We also have audio in the main bar area."

Brooks looked uncomfortable.

Olivia noticed.

"Interesting," she said. "Your officer appears less confident now that we know the incident was recorded."

Captain Mitchell rubbed his forehead.

"Ms. Bennett, I sincerely apologize for what happened."

"I appreciate the apology, but an apology isn't an investigation."

"Of course."

"I want the officers' body-camera footage preserved immediately. I also want the dispatch records, the original complaint, the radio communications, and any messages exchanged before they entered this establishment."

Mitchell nodded.

"That can be arranged."

"Not tomorrow. Not next week. Immediately."

"Understood."

Brooks suddenly interrupted.

"Captain, with respect, I don't think this is necessary. We were responding to a call."

Olivia turned toward him.

"Then you should have no difficulty explaining the call."

Brooks opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Captain Mitchell stepped between them.

"Daniel, that's enough."

But Olivia wasn't interested in another argument.

She reached into her handbag and removed her phone.

"Captain, I want to make another point. I wasn't randomly selected for this encounter, was I?"

Mitchell stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean someone knew I would be here tonight."

The captain didn't respond.

Olivia continued.
