“And there is one name in that register that none of you will expect.”

Olivia frowned.

“Whose?”

Judge Whitmore looked at Elizabeth.

“Your mother's.”

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

Olivia stepped back.

“What?”

Judge Whitmore continued carefully.

“Elizabeth was listed as a protected witness, but the same document contains a second entry. She was also listed as an operational coordinator.”

Thomas stared at his wife.

“Is that true?”

Elizabeth didn't answer immediately.

Then she nodded.

“I was.”

Thomas looked devastated.

“Elizabeth…”

“I didn't start it,” she said. “But I helped them keep it running after you disappeared. I thought I could control what happened. I thought I could save people from the inside.”

Olivia's voice was quiet.

“How many people were hurt because of you?”

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.

“Too many.”

Nobody spoke.

Then the judge handed Olivia a folded document.

“This is a copy of the original witness register. I found it among Daniel's papers. There is one entry I want you to read.”

Olivia unfolded it.

The document contained dozens of names. Some were familiar: Sarah Miller, James Porter, Daniel Whitmore, and several former police officers.

Near the bottom was another name.

ELIZABETH BENNETT — OPERATIONAL COORDINATOR.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

FINAL DIRECTIVE: ENSURE OLIVIA BENNETT SURVIVES UNTIL THE RELEASE.

Olivia looked up.

“Why would they want me alive?”

Elizabeth answered softly.

“Because you are the only person who can legally release the money and authenticate the original records.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then the money remains hidden. The people who financed Nightfall can start again.”

Olivia looked at the judge.

“Where is the vault?”

Judge Whitmore pointed toward a staircase at the end of the maintenance shaft.

“Beneath the courthouse. But there is something else you should know.”

“What?”

“Someone has already entered it.”

A distant sound echoed below them.

A door opening.

Then a man's voice came through the underground speakers.

“Olivia Bennett. I know you're coming.”

Walker raised his weapon.

“Who is that?”

The voice continued.

“You have spent your entire life searching for the people who destroyed your family. You found your father. You found your mother. You found the men responsible.”

A pause.

“But you still haven't found the person who gave the original order.”

Olivia felt a chill.

The voice sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

Then the speaker crackled again.

“Come down, Olivia. It's time you met the person who signed your father's disappearance order.”

The line went dead.

Thomas looked toward his daughter.

“Stay behind me.”

But Olivia was already moving toward the staircase.

At the bottom stood a reinforced door.

Beside it was a security camera.

The screen flickered on.

A face appeared.

An elderly man with silver hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and a familiar expression.

Olivia stared.

She knew that face.

It was the man whose funeral she had attended as a child.

The man whose death certificate had been shown to her mother.

The man whose name had appeared on the old family photographs.

Her grandfather.

Arthur Bennett.

He looked directly into the camera and smiled.

“Hello, Olivia.”

The door unlocked.

And behind it waited the man who had started Project Nightfall before anyone else knew it existed.

Olivia stood before the reinforced door, unable to move.

Arthur Bennett.

Her grandfather.

The man whose funeral she had attended when she was twelve. The man whose photograph had remained on the mantelpiece of her childhood home. The man her mother had described as a respected businessman who had died peacefully after a long illness.

Now he was standing on a security screen beneath the courthouse, twenty years after his supposed death.

“Open the door,” Arthur said through the speaker.

Olivia stared at the camera.

“You're dead.”

Arthur smiled.

“That's what I wanted everyone to believe.”

Thomas Bennett stepped forward, his face filled with anger.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Arthur's expression changed slightly.

“Thomas. Still blaming everyone but yourself, I see.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“No, my boy. I gave your family an opportunity. You chose to throw it away.”

Olivia turned toward her father.

“You knew he was alive?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I swear I didn't.”

Arthur laughed softly.

“Of course he didn't. Thomas has always been very good at believing whatever makes his conscience comfortable.”

Olivia stepped closer to the camera.

“Why did you fake your death?”

“Because powerful men cannot operate freely when everyone knows who they are. I needed to disappear from public records. I needed to become a ghost.”

“And Project Nightfall?”

Arthur's smile faded.

“Project Nightfall was my idea.”

The words seemed to drain the air from the corridor.

Walker raised his weapon toward the camera, as though he could somehow threaten the man through the screen.
