Her phone vibrated.
An incoming message from an unknown number.
She opened it.
There was no greeting.
Only a photograph of her parents leaving the hospital.
Beneath it were seven words:
YOUR FAMILY IS NOT SAFE YET. COME ALONE.
Olivia read the message twice.
Then another message arrived.
ACCOUNT 001 IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
A final photograph appeared.
It showed a large building surrounded by trees.
Olivia recognized the location.
It was the private residence of Chief Justice Samuel Harrington.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
MIDNIGHT. BRING THE ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Olivia looked at the clock.
11:21 p.m.
She called Walker again.
“Get Rebecca. We have a new lead.”
“Where are you going?”
Olivia picked up the black leather folder.
“To meet the man who may have funded Project Nightfall before Arthur Bennett ever created it.”
Walker raised his voice.
“Olivia, don't go alone!”
She looked toward the window.
A dark vehicle was parked across the street.
Its headlights were off.
“I don't think I'm alone anymore,” she whispered.
Then the vehicle's headlights suddenly illuminated.
The passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She looked directly toward Olivia's apartment window and raised one hand.
It was Sarah Miller.
But Sarah was supposed to be at a secure location with her brother.
Olivia's phone rang.
Sarah's name appeared on the screen.
Olivia answered.
“Sarah?”
Sarah's voice was barely audible.
“Olivia, don't come outside.”
Olivia looked through the window again.
Sarah was standing beside the vehicle, but she was not alone.
Someone was holding a weapon against her back.
“Who is with you?” Olivia whispered.
Sarah swallowed.
“I found out who controls Account 001.”
“Who?”
Sarah looked up toward Olivia's window.
Then she said the words that made Olivia's blood run cold.
“It's the person who ordered your father's disappearance.”
Olivia tightened her grip on the phone.
“Arthur?”
“No.”
Sarah's voice trembled.
“Arthur was only following orders.”
A figure emerged from the shadows behind her.
The man raised his face toward the apartment.
Olivia recognized him immediately.
