Salesman Ordered an Older Customer Out—Then Learned Who Owned the Showroom
Chapter 6
The woman looked surprised.
"I'm looking for my grandson. He works here."
Daniel smiled.
"Of course. I'll help you find him."
Thomas watched from a distance.
Near noon, a man in work clothes entered the showroom.
His hands were stained with grease.
Daniel recognized the smell immediately.
Motor oil.
The old Daniel might have watched him from across the room.
The new Daniel approached him.
"Welcome."
The man nodded.
"I know I probably don't look like your usual customer."
Daniel felt the words strike him.
"Sir," he said, "we don't have a usual customer."
The man stared at him for a moment.
Then he smiled.
"That's good to hear."
He spent nearly an hour examining different vehicles.
Daniel answered every question patiently.
Eventually, the man asked about financing options.
Daniel explained them carefully.
When the man left, he handed Daniel a business card.
Daniel looked down.
The man owned one of the largest construction companies in the region.
Marcus walked over.
"Well."
Daniel smiled.
"I know."
"Could've been a big mistake."
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
"It almost was."
Thomas approached.
"Did you enjoy today?"
Daniel nodded.
"I learned something."
"Only one thing?"
Daniel laughed.
"More than one."
Thomas's expression became serious.
"Good. Because yesterday wasn't about embarrassing you."
Daniel looked at him.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
Thomas placed a hand on his shoulder.
"People don't remember every product you sell them. They remember how you made them feel."
Daniel looked through the glass doors at the street outside.
For the first time, he understood that his job was not simply to decide who deserved his attention.
His job was to give it.
And he had only just begun to understand what that truly meant.
Three weeks passed.
Thomas Bennett remained at Sterling Motors.
That alone made the employees nervous.
The founder had always been a distant figure. Now he walked through the dealership almost every day. Sometimes he sat quietly in the customer lounge. Sometimes he watched sales meetings. Occasionally, he spoke with receptionists, cleaners, mechanics, and security guards.
He seemed interested in everyone.
Daniel changed more than anyone expected.
He still wore expensive suits.
He still wanted to become the dealership's top salesman.
But he no longer decided who was worth his time before speaking to them.
Then, one rainy Thursday afternoon, the test arrived.
Daniel was helping a wealthy client finalize paperwork for a high-end sports car when the front doors opened.
An older woman entered.
Her umbrella was broken. Rainwater dripped from her coat. Her shoes were muddy.
The receptionist was busy answering the phone.
Daniel looked at the woman.
Then at his client.
The old Daniel would have stayed where he was.
The commission on the sports car was enormous.
But Daniel excused himself.
"I'll be right back."
He walked toward the woman.
"Good afternoon, ma'am. Are you all right?"
She looked relieved.
"I hope so. My car stopped working outside."
Daniel looked through the windows.
An old sedan was parked awkwardly near the curb.
"Do you work here?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Could someone help me move it? I'm afraid I'll block traffic."
Daniel immediately called one of the service technicians.
Together, they helped move the vehicle to a safe place.
