Salesman Ordered an Older Customer Out—Then Learned Who Owned the Showroom
Chapter 7
The woman thanked him repeatedly.
"It's no trouble," Daniel said.
When he returned, his wealthy client had finished the paperwork.
Marcus was sitting beside him.
Daniel froze.
"I thought you lost the sale," Marcus whispered.
The client looked up.
"Your colleague told me what happened."
Daniel prepared himself for disappointment.
Instead, the client smiled.
"You chose to help someone who needed you."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes, sir."
The man signed the final document.
"That's the kind of person I prefer doing business with."
Daniel looked across the showroom.
Thomas Bennett stood near the entrance.
He had watched everything.
Daniel smiled.
Thomas nodded once.
Later that evening, Thomas invited Daniel into his office.
"You did well today."
Daniel sat across from him.
"Thank you."
Thomas opened a drawer.
"I've been thinking about something."
Daniel waited.
"We're opening a new Sterling Motors location next year."
Daniel's eyes widened.
Thomas continued.
"It will need a sales manager."
Daniel's heart began beating faster.
"Mr. Bennett, I—"
Thomas raised a hand.
"I'm not offering you the position."
Daniel stopped.
Thomas smiled slightly.
"Not yet."
Daniel laughed despite himself.
"Fair enough."
"You have the ability. You understand the business. But leadership isn't about being the loudest person in the room."
Thomas leaned forward.
"It's about making sure the quietest person is treated as if they matter."
Daniel nodded.
He understood.
When he left the office, he walked past the black Aurelia.
It was no longer the most important thing in the showroom.
Not to him.
The people walking around it were.
One month later, Sterling Motors hosted its annual private event.
The showroom was decorated with flowers, lights, and banners. Invitations had been sent to some of the dealership's most valuable clients.
Daniel was responsible for coordinating the sales team.
It was his first major leadership assignment.
Everything went smoothly until a man entered through the front doors without an invitation.
He was thin, unshaven, and dressed in a faded sweatshirt.
One of the younger salesmen immediately approached Daniel.
"Should I call security?"
Daniel looked toward the man.
"Why?"
"He doesn't look like he's here for the event."
Daniel felt an old memory return.
A worn jacket.
Faded jeans.
A hand resting on a black car.
Daniel looked at the young salesman.
"Did you ask him?"
The salesman hesitated.
"No."
"Then ask."
The salesman approached the man.
A few minutes later, Daniel joined them.
The stranger was looking at an electric luxury SUV.
"Good evening," Daniel said. "I'm Daniel. Is there anything I can help you with?"
The man looked nervous.
"I know this is probably a bad time."
"There's no bad time to ask a question."
The man smiled weakly.
"I work as a mechanic."
Daniel nodded.
"Then you probably know more about engines than I do."
The man laughed.
They began talking.
His name was Raymond.
